MEET PHASE 1
Phase 1 Engineering
We started Phase 1 out of a love of electronics, physics, problem solving, and serving others. In the past we have always looked for the most difficult problems to help solve because this lets us learn and grow while offering a great competitive edge for our customers and their products. No two problems are the same, but with a solid problem solving methodology and creativity we can find some way to get things done.
MEET THE TEAM
Brandyn Blehm
PCB Designer & Technician
Brandyn provides expertise in all areas maker-related including 3D printing and CAD, fixture design and construction, and PCB builds in-house and outside. He can build anything out of anything. He started as a technician but has focused on PCBA design over the last several years, including 12-layer boards with RF and high-speed constraints and high voltage and current designs. One of Brandyn’s favorite projects has been the design of an incredibly small form factor, high-current motor drive PCB.
Cullen Davison
RF & Hardware Engineer
Cullen specializes in hardware and radio frequency. He started at Phase 1 as an intern, graduated with a BSE from Michigan State University, and is working on his Master’s in Electrical Engineering at Purdue University. His interests include RF circuits, antenna design, EM simulations, EMC, and circuit design. He is named on multiple antenna patents.
Trysten Dembeck
Software & Systems Engineer
Trysten is a computer engineer who joined the team through GVSU’s co-op program. He earned his BSE and MSE degrees from GVSU, focusing on embedded systems and machine learning. His work spans hardware and software development with expertise in circuit design, app development, and digital signal processing. He earned Best Paper Finalist honors presenting his master’s thesis at the CAINE 2024 conference.
Ben DeVries
Embedded Engineer
Ben graduated as an Electrical Engineer from GVSU and joined the team through GVSU’s co-op program. His wide-ranging interests include embedded hardware, firmware and systems and all things driver-related, particularly within Linux and Zephyr. He is an OS expert who closely follows security practices and techniques.
Eric Emens
RF & Hardware Engineer
Eric’s work centers on electromagnetics, RF design, hardware design and product development. He holds a BS in Theoretical Mathematics from Aquinas College and a MS in Electrical Engineering from Grand Valley State University and is driven by opportunities to innovate, finding creative solutions, and pushing technology forward. This has led to his contribution to and name on multiple antenna patents.
David English
Software & Embedded Engineer
David graduated as a computer engineer from Michigan Technological University. He specializes in software and embedded firmware. Some of his favorite projects include a precision crop planting system and a high-volume, end-of-line verifier for RFID tag production.
Laurie Guthrie
Laurie is the office mom who cooks often and keeps the refrigerator full. Years ago she and Warren opened their home to a small start-up in the basement, Phase 1 Engineering. She graciously took care of the team at home during the first few years of business. She continues to care for the team and makes Phase 1 a better place to work.
Mitchell Hoeker
Software & Embedded Engineer
Mitchell joined the Phase 1 team as a GVSU co-op student and was hired full-time upon graduating with his BSCE from Grand Valley State University. His interests include embedded software development, Linux kernel drivers, and exploring new technical challenges. Among his favorite projects is the design of a wireless dog collar system.
Sean Jacobsma
Software & Embedded Engineer
Sean has a focus on high-level software. He holds a Bachelor’s in Computer Engineering from Calvin College, and a Masters in Acoustics from Penn State. His interests include App design, Embedded Linux, Web Dev, Signal Processing, ANC, and any challenging problem involving sound.
Jeremy Latham
Hardware & RF Engineer
Jeremy graduated from the University of Michigan with a BS in Electrical Engineering. His interests include hardware: analog circuits, RF testing and design, motor control, and switching mode power supplies. He is named on multiple pending patents on a novel medical-application motor. Jeremy enjoys tackling tough problems with unique solutions.
John Videtich
Owner / Founder, Electrical Engineer
John has broad capability in electronics design from circuits and systems to product launch. He has a Master’s Degree from Illinois Institute of Technology, specializing in DSP and Control systems. He has high aptitude for MATLAB/Simulink as well as embedded code. He has made substantial contributions to the field of motor controls and is named on many patents.
Laura Videtich
CPA, Administration
Laura manages the non-engineering aspects of the business. Her days include tracking budgets, processing payroll, and taking care of people and details.
Interns
Luke Brents
Electrical Engineering intern
John Bushman
Electrical Engineering intern
Keagan Hunt
